چکیده

CASE REPORT A Yoruba schoolboy of sixteen was first seen in April 1962, having suffered from fever and pain ill the low back and the left hip for three weeks. He was thin but did not look ill. He was able to stand unaided, but his back had lost the normal lumbar curve and was held rigid. Percussion of the lumbo-sacral area caused pain and the erector spinae muscles were tender. Three weeks later the pain had become very severe and completely prevented him from walking. Radiographs revealed slight diminution of the L.4-L.5 disc space with a suspicion of early bridging (Fig. I ). A diagnosis of acute osteomyelitis of the spine was made. He was

Antioxidant Enzymes and Acute Phase Proteins Correlate with Marker of Lipid Peroxide in Adult Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients

Objective(s) Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder characterized by chronic haemolytic anaemia. Haemoglobin S containing red blood cells may be susceptible to oxidative stress due to imbalance between production of reactive oxygen species and the countering effect of the various antioxidants present in the body. Materials and Methods We evaluated some antioxidant enzymes which include gl...

Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis in Heterozygous Sickle Haemoglobin, the Role of Parenteral Drug Abuse: A Case Report

Sickle cell trait is a benign haemoglobin disorder which rarely results in disease or complications. A few cases of osteonecrosis have been reported in the literature in parts of the world with advanced health care system. There are various predispositions to developing avascular necrosis in general, while the sickle beta globin gene inheritance is the most efficient factor. Injection drug abus...

Absorption Spectra of Normal Adults and Patients with Sickle Cell Anaemia Haemoglobins Treated with Hydrogen Peroxide at Two pH Values

Background: The aim of the present study was application of haemoglobin absorption spectroscopy as a distinguishing tool for identification of two haemoglobin types-HbA and HbS. Material and Methods: Millimolar absorptivities of normal adult haemoglobin (HbA) and sickle cell haemoglobin (HbS) were monitored at pH values of 7.2 and 5.0, within the ultra violet and visible spectral range (250-...

C1 Inhibitor, C3 Activator, IgG, IgA, and IgM Titers in Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients with Plasmodium falciparum

Background: Sickle cell disease (HbSS) is a major health problem in Nigeria and ma-laria has been implicated as a leading cause of morbidity/mortality in sickle cell disease patients. Few reasons were put forward to explain the observed morbidity/mortality of HbSS subjects due to Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria. Objectives: To determine the level of immunoglobulin classes (IgM, Ig...

Hypertransfusion Therapy in Sickle Cell Disease in Nigeria

Introduction. Hypertransfusion refers to chronic blood transfusion therapy aimed at ameliorating disease complications in various haemopathies particularly the haemoglobinopathies. In sickle cell disease, hypertransfusion is aimed at maintaining patient's haemoglobin level at 10 to 11 g/dL using haemoglobin AA blood and its resultant dilutional effect on sickle haemoglobin is sustained by inter...
